The Department of History at Eastern Kentucky University is an active community of scholar/teachers and learners engaged in a common pursuit of historical understanding. Our faculty specialize in fields stretching around the globe and across the vast chronological sweep of history. We take great pride in the achievements of our faculty and students alike. As highly active researchers in their fields, our faculty have published more than a dozen major books and scores of journal articles that have made our department an emerging nationally respected center for historical scholarship. Our professors bring the excitement of their cutting-edge research to the classroom, where our small class sizes ensure active faculty-student interaction. We offer three degree-programs: B.A. in History, B.A. in History/Teaching, and M.A. in History. Our graduates have gone on to careers in a broad variety of fields ranging from museum work and public history to law, business, and teaching. We have hundreds of successful alumni teaching in secondary schools across the commonwealth of Kentucky and all around the nation, as well as some who have gone on to earn Ph.Ds and become college and university faculty themselves. Though we are a large, public, comprehensive university, we at Eastern have long been proud of our tradition of delivering high-quality instruction in a personal manner that is responsive to the needs and aspirations of each of our students. Please explore our website, and feel free to e-mail, call, or drop by our offices on the top floor of the Keith Building if you have questions about our department or our programs.

"Breaking News"

The William Collins Undergraduate Award Winner for "2007 - 2008" is Ashley Wray. Congratulations Ashley!

During the Spring 2008 Phi Alpha Theta Kentucky Regional Conference in Louisville we won more awards than any other school with two.  Ashley Wray was tied for runner-up in the best undergraduate paper category.  Aaron Clark was the runner-up in the best graduate paper category.  We also had very strong presentations from Lindsey Cross, Susan Gray, and Krystal Hunt.  One other presenter, Kathleen Elberson, submitted a paper and was on the program but had a flat tire and could not participate.  This still gave us more presenters than any other school.  Please congratulate all of these students when you see them.  I would also like to extend thanks to Brad Wood, Catherine Howey and Fiona Halloran for their continuing involvement in Phi Alpha Theta and the History Club and to all of you who worked with these students on their papers, including Tom Appleton, Todd, Hartch, John Bowes, and John Lowry.

Also, we will be hosting the next Phi Alpha Theta Kentucky Regional Conference on our campus in the spring of 2009.  I hope that many of you will be able to continue to provide various forms of support and assistance to Phi Alpha Theta as we move towards the conference.
